About the Event

RATING | PG-13

Genre: Performance Art

"The Opera ghost really existed. He was not, as was long believed, a creature of the imagination of the artists..." The opening line the 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux. The French gothic horror novel that is full of references to American pop-culture contemporary to its time has remained a part of the lexicon since its release 114 years ago. From the 1925 film that launched Lon Chaney's career, to the 1943 Claude Rains film, to 1974 cult classic "Phantom of the Paradise", to the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, the 2004 movie adaptation of that musical, and the sequel musical "Love Never Dies". (Just to name a few of the many retellings.) This show will explore the influence of pop-culture on the original novel and the Phantom's influence on pop-culture ever since. But really this show is about me, and how the tale of the Opera Ghost has influenced my life over the past 20 years since I first saw it. From my first kiss, to long term friendships, becoming a theater kid, kindness from strangers, internet phandom, and coming to terms with turning 30. This one woman show goes to prove the opposite of the opening line of the original novel and show exactly how the Opera Ghost is in fact a creature of the imagination of the artists through story telling, humorous power point presentation, and occasionally prop comedy.
